About OpenID

OpenID is a solution towards the many sets of login details that users of websites tend to build up. Rather than having to remember or write down lots of login details, an OpenID user can use just one username and password to log into multiple services.

Each website participating in the OpenID scheme accepts an OpenID username, in the form of a web address. When this address is followed by the participating website, the user can authenticate themselves by entering their OpenID password. Importantly, this password is only ever passed to the OpenID provider, and not the participating website - known as the relying party.

An OpenID identity is always free, and can be either provided by an OpenID provider, or self created - this is particularly useful for website owners, who wish to maintain a single online identity.
